Producers for Pendleton Farms have made a commitment to change from the traditional confinement pig operation. For years farmers have been told they had to increase intensity and raise their hogs on slatted floors, in crates, and gestation stalls as well as increasing levels of synthetic feeds. However, farms in the Pendleton Farms program have made a commitment to change this. Any farmer who is using crates or stalls must convert to the ecologic swine system. This system uses straw bedding, group housing, and no stall or crates. Here, the hogs are able to play, eat and frolic with their herdmates. The animals are healthier, happier and produce better quality pork.
